Not all ceremonial grade chocolate is the same. In order to be considered genuine “ceremonial grade” cacao, there are a few important components:

  1. The beans used are native and grown in native soil. The rare wild strains used in Kakao Ceremonial Grade Chocolate are known as “Chuncho,” translated as “from the jungle.” Cacao grows naturally in Central & South America.

  2. There have been no alterations to the plant or its seeds. Wild strains grown naturally in South America that have not been genetically modified are particularly rare, thanks to the boom of chocolate around the world. The strains used in Kakao Drinking Chocolate are the same ones that have grown in these regions for the past 10 million years.

  3. The whole cacao bean is used. Unlike most raw cacao products available on the market, the butter is not separated from the cacao bean but instead is included in the ground finished product. This creates a unique texture and depth when made into a drink. It also gives Kakao Drinking Chocolate a higher nutritional content and higher concentration of the plant’s medicine.

  4. From plant to cup, the process is as minimal as possible. Over-processing strips the plant of its valuable nutritional and ceremonial components. Minimal processing helps preserve the plant in its most natural state possible. The only processing Kakao Drinking Chocolate goes through is fermenting, low temperature roasting, and stone grounding.

Cacao has several compounds beneficial for overall health:

  • Theobromine: lowers blood pressure, increases HDL (good cholesterol), enhances lung functioning, enhances cognitive functioning, reduces inflammation

  • Tryptophan: precursor to serotonin, which improves mood, sleep, reduces feelings of anxiety & depression, and promotes overall well-being
